ECOPOESIS: Dark Ecologies

April, 2019
San Francisco, CA

The inaugural Ecopoesis symposium and workshop took place at CCA in April 2019, featuring Professor Timothy Morton, a leading ecological philosopher and Professor and Chair of English at Rice University.

Morton’s book Dark Ecology served as the thematic catalyst for the event, provoking us to consider new modes of ecological awareness that reflect impending crisis but also offer ways to adapt to and accept profound change. The workshop included a diverse and interdisciplinary cohort of CCA students, faculty, and invited outside guests collaborating in three working groups to produce works of environmental messaging. The groups were organized around three “re-” words — retreat, remain, and resist — that framed the day’s conversations and informed the made work. The gathering included several shared meals and concluded with a public keynote talk by Prof. Morton at CCA’s San Francisco campus.
